WTC Final : Choosing Ngidi Instead Of Paterson Was A Strategic Decision: Bavuma

WTC Final : Choosing Ngidi Instead Of Paterson Was A Strategic Decision: Bavuma

Lungi Ngidi is set to make his return to Test cricket in the ICC World Test Championship(WTC) final at Lord's.

South Africa has finalised its playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, with Lungi Ngidi making his return to Test cricket after 10 months. His selection over Dane Paterson was a strategic decision, prioritising extra pace and bounce in an attack that also includes Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj.
Ngidi’s Selection Over Paterson
Captain Temba Bavuma acknowledged that choosing Ngidi over Paterson was one of the toughest decisions. While Paterson had been South Africa’s best bowler last season, Ngidi’s height (1.93m) and speed were seen as advantages, especially on Lord’s slope, which favors taller bowlers.
Ngidi has played at Lord’s before, but his recent Test experience is limited, with only two matches in the last 18 months. He has also struggled with injuries, including a groin issue that kept him out for several months. Despite this, the team believes his raw pace and bounce will complement the attack better than Paterson’s medium pace.
Mulder’s New Role at No. 3
South Africa has also made a bold move by promoting Wiaan Mulder to bat at No. 3, a position he has only played twice before. His most successful batting spot has been No. 5, where he averages 39.20, but the team wants to give him more confidence and back his ability.
Former South African great Hashim Amla, who was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, advised Mulder to be ready for early challenges and focus on handling the new ball. Amla himself was not a natural No. 3 but grew into the role over time. He emphasised that technique and experience are key to succeeding in this position.
Paterson’s Future Uncertain
At 36 years old, Paterson was left out of the squad for upcoming Tests against Zimbabwe, signalling that his international career may be nearing its end. Meanwhile, Ngidi (29) and Mulder (27) are expected to be part of South Africa’s long-term plans.
Paterson had delivered 68 overs in the two Tests he played last season, taking 13 wickets at an average of 16.92, making him South Africa’s best bowler. However, the team’s desire to lengthen their batting lineup and balance their attack ultimately cost him a place in the XI.
South Africa’s Batting Strategy
South Africa originally planned to have Tristan Stubbs at No. 3 but moved him to No. 5, where he can play with more attacking intent. Bavuma will bat at No. 4, providing stability between Mulder and Stubbs.
With Bavuma as South Africa’s top Test run-scorer in the last five years, the team’s success will depend heavily on his performance. The Proteas are looking to build a strong batting core for the future, and Mulder’s promotion is part of that plan.
South Africa’s Bold Approach
South Africa’s bold selections for the WTC final show their focus on balance and long-term planning. Ngidi’s inclusion adds raw pace, while Mulder’s promotion to No. 3 is a strategic experiment. The team hopes these decisions will help them compete strongly against Australia and set the foundation for future success.
