Harmanpreet Declares: Our Strongest T20 World Cup Team Yet
Harmanpreet Declares: Our Strongest T20 World Cup Team Yet
Harmanpreet and Amol Muzumdar speak to the media before departing to the UAE for the T20 World Cup.
Harmanpreet Kaur is confident with the India team at her departure for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 because of the expertise the team have. Out of the 15 players in India's squad, 12 have played in the tournament before. Shreyanka Patil, Asha Sobhana, and S Sajana are the only ones playing in their first World Cup. They earned their spots with impressive performances in the Women's Premier League.
She added that if she discusses the team then they have few players who has been in this for long and they know how to play very well. And at last, she said that this team is the best team that is going to play in the T20 World Cup.
"Pooja Vastrakar is performing excellently, and Renuka Singh is providing great support. Renuka consistently delivers crucial breakthroughs for us. Arundhati Reddy is reliable, able to bowl a few overs and contribute with the bat in the lower order. While I can't compare our bowling line-up to other teams since each has its own strengths and weaknesses, I have full confidence in my team. I understand their capabilities and know what they can achieve."
Apart from the Asia Cup India has played T20I against, South Africa, Australia, England and Bangladesh. And they lost the series against Australia and England and every margin was 2-1, on the other hand, they also won 5-0 against Bangladesh along with a margin of 1-1 as one match was washed out. But the surprise came at the time of the Asia Cup when Sri Lanka beat in the final match.
Harmanpreet said that, at the time of the Aisa Cup they played really well in terms of the entire tournament. It was only one game that didn’t go the way they wanted. And for that, they called up a meeting and discussed how they would work with their shortcomings and where is the improvement needed in those situations.
India's last competitive matches before the World Cup were in the Asia Cup in July. Since then, the team has held several training camps, and some players participated in the Hundred and the Women's Caribbean Premier League. Head coach Amol Muzumdar emphasized that these camps were tailored to address specific areas, and he believes that the limited game time won't affect India's performance in the World Cup.
Muzumdar explained, "We organized a fitness and fielding camp at the NCA, focusing exclusively on these two areas for 15 days without touching on skills training.
Following that, we held a ten-day skills camp, which included not only net sessions but also nearly five competitive games in ten days. So, in terms of game time, we’ve covered that aspect. The games were highly competitive, featuring various opponents and skill sets tailored for those matches."
India completed the runner-ups at the T20 World Cup in 2020 and couldn’t make it to the semi-finals in 2018 and 2023. Not only that they were close to winning the gold medal to Australia at the inaugural Commonwealth Games in 2022.
To handle the pressure in a better way, the players also have some sessions with the sports psychologist Mugdha Bavare. Harmanpreet has previously mentioned how Bavare helped her overcome mental fatigue, and she noted that the recent sessions in the camp last month have been beneficial for the team.
