ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Co-host West Indies announce squad

Rovman Powell will lead the 15-players squad for West Indies Team.

West Indies has announced the squad of 15 members for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024, which will along hosted by Caribbean-based countries and the USA. Rovman Powell will be leading the squad intending to regain the glory on home soil.

The young blood right-arm fast bowler Shamar Joseph, who impressed the spectators with his bowling figures during the Test debut series against Australia earlier this year, has now successfully marked his seat for the squad in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Alzarri Joseph will also be in the squad to help the pace-bowling members with his experiences and will be vice-captain of the squad for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Shimron Hetmyer was able to return to the team after missing back from the last T20 series against Australia. Currently, he is playing in IPL for the Rajasthan Royals team and performing satisfactorily in the tournament with a Strike rate of  184 scoring 83 runs in 4 innings.

Kyle Mayers, who was part of the squad for the Australia tour, was, however, out of the squad opting for a lower-order batter over an opener. Moreover, pacer Oshane Thomas being knocked out of the team.

The spots of Johnson Charles, Brandon King and Shai Hope are assigned in the top order. The Windies have got a nucleus of hard-hitting big hitters and all-rounders such as Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Powell, Jason Holder, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd that makes the team stronger from the middle order.

Along the pace bowling department, Akeal Hossain and Gudakesh Motie will be supporting the spin-bowling department in the squad.

During the Press Conference on the selection, the Director of West Indies Cricket Desmond Haynes spoke:

“We had a very long discussion with the situation of the batting line-up," he said. "I want to state very clearly that our focus has always been (on) roles – roles that we want people to play. The situation of someone like Shamar Joseph, you really can’t question someone like him, we saw him in Australia. He ticked the boxes for us.

"It was some very close decisions, regarding the selection of Kyle Mayers and Shimron Hetmyer – but we looked at who we wanted the extra batter batting down the order.”
