Suryakumar Yadav is recovering after his surgery for a sports hernia
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has undergone a successful surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen. This was Suryakumar’s third surgery in as many years. He underwent ankle surgery in 2023 and previously had the same sports hernia procedure in 2024.
India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is currently recovering after undergoing successful surgery for a sports hernia in Munich, Germany. With no immediate matches lined up for him, the timing worked out well for the 34-year-old, who’s expected to return to lead India’s T20 side in Bangladesh on August 26.
Suryakumar was last seen lighting up IPL 2025, where he played a key role in the Mumbai Indians’ journey to the playoffs. He smashed a record 717 runs the most ever by a non-opener in IPL history and the highest by any MI batter in a single season. He also set a new world record with 16 consecutive scores of 25 or more.
India’s current focus is on the ongoing Test series in England, which runs until August 4. After that, the team heads to Bangladesh for three ODIs and three T20Is. Since Suryakumar hasn’t played 50-over cricket since the 2023 World Cup final, this break gave him the perfect window for surgery and recovery.
He took over the T20I captaincy after India’s World Cup win in June 2024, following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Since then, India’s T20 team has embraced a bold, attacking style. With deep batting and fearless hitting, they’ve regularly crossed the 250-run mark including a massive 297 against Bangladesh in October 2024, the second-highest total in T20 history.
Suryakumar is expected to begin rehab soon at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. If all goes well, he’ll be back in action just in time to lead India’s next T20 campaign.
