Suryakumar and Santner power Mumbai Indians into IPL 2025 playoffs
IPL 2025: 11th time Mumbai Indians team qualify for the playoffs in IPL history. MI's win against DC was their third by a margin of 50-plus runs this season.
Mumbai Indians secured their IPL 2025 playoff spot with a dominant performance. Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir smashed 48 runs in the last two overs, turning the game around after DC’s bowlers had controlled most of the innings. Mitchell Santner then led MI’s bowling attack, keeping DC in check. In the end, DC struggled in the chase and fell short by 59 runs, ending their campaign on a disappointing note.
MI’s Inning
Mumbai Indians had a mixed start, losing Rohit Sharma early but finding momentum through Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks. Rickelton smashed two sixes off Dushmantha Chameera, while Jacks kept the runs flowing before falling to Mukesh Kumar. Suryakumar Yadav ensured MI finished the PowerPlay strongly at 54/2.
In the middle overs, Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam slowed MI down, restricting boundaries and dismissing Rickelton. Suryakumar and Tilak Varma struggled to accelerate, with Varma eventually falling to Mukesh. MI crossed 100 in the 14th over but found it tough to push the scoring rate higher.
The final overs saw a dramatic turnaround. Kuldeep kept things tight, but Suryakumar and Naman Dhir exploded in the last two overs, smashing 48 runs. Suryakumar reached his fifty with a six, while Dhir hit multiple boundaries. Their late assault pushed MI to a strong total of 180/5, setting up a tough chase for the opposition.
Delhi Capital’s Innings
Delhi Capitals struggled in their chase from the start, losing three wickets in the PowerPlay. Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and Will Jacks struck early, dismissing Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul, and Abishek Porel. Vipraj Nigam tried to counter with a few boundaries, but DC finished the PowerPlay at 49/3.
In the middle overs, Mitchell Santner tightened the grip, dismissing Nigam and later breaking a partnership between Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma. Jasprit Bumrah also made an impact, trapping Tristan Stubbs leg-before. Santner’s double-wicket over in the 15th further derailed DC’s chase, leaving them in deep trouble.
By the death overs, DC needed 76 runs with only lower-order batters left. Bumrah and Karn Sharma wrapped up the innings quickly, with Bumrah taking two of the last three wickets. DC collapsed for just 121, falling 59 runs short and exiting the tournament.
