Najmul Hossain Shanto No Longer Be a Test Captain for Bangladesh
Najmul Hossain Shanto has announced his decision to step down as Bangladesh’s Test captain following the team’s 1-0 series defeat against Sri Lanka.
Najmul Hossain has announced his retirement as Bangladesh’s Test captain. It has been reported earlier that he might be continuing in the post of Test Skipper. However, he made his final decision after Bangladesh was defeated by Sri Lanka by 78 runs on Saturday in Colombo.
After the post-match conference, he said that he would like to make an announcement, after which he added that he would be retiring from the Bangladesh Test Captaincy. "I don’t want to continue as captain in this format anymore. This is not because of any personal reason. I’m doing this for the good of the team. I believe this change will help the team grow."
Najmul also said he didn’t think it made sense for Bangladesh to have three different captains for the three formats of cricket. Since Mehidy Hasan is now the ODI captain, and Najmul already gave up T20I captaincy, he felt it was better for the team if he stepped down completely.
"I’ve been part of this team for years, and in my opinion, having three captains might confuse things. The cricket board might have other ideas, and I respect that. But I believe this decision is best for the team’s success."
He also made it clear that it’s not about being upset over losing the ODI captaincy. "There’s nothing personal here," he added. "I already told the cricket operations department a few days ago."
