Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new ODI captain. He replaced Najmul Shanto, who will now lead only in Test cricket, while Litton Das will continue as the skipper of the T20 team.
Bangladesh has appointed Mehidy Hasan Miraz as their ODI captain for the next 12 months, starting with the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka. This decision means Bangladesh now has different captains for each format Najmul Hossain Shanto remains the Test captain, while Litton Das leads the T20I side.
Mehidy expressed his excitement about the role, calling it a "huge honour" and emphasising his belief in the team's ability to play fearless cricket. He has previously led Bangladesh in four ODIs when Shanto was injured, though the team lost all four matches. Despite this, his consistent performances with both bat and ball, along with his leadership qualities, made him the ideal choice for the role.
BCB’s cricket operations chairman, Nazmul Abedeen, highlighted Mehidy's fighting spirit and energetic presence, stating that he has the temperament and maturity to guide Bangladesh forward in ODIs. Meanwhile, Shanto, who was Bangladesh’s captain across all formats last year, remains an important part of the leadership group.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, Bangladesh, currently ranked No. 10, must secure a spot among the top eight teams for automatic qualification. Mehidy’s leadership will be crucial in shaping the team’s future in this format.
