Cricket at the LA Olympics 2028 will begin on July 12

Los Angeles Olympics 2028: A total of six teams each in men's and women's sections and 180 players will compete in the T20 format. The T20 tournament will mostly have double-header matches.

Cricket is all set to make a historic return to the Olympic stage in 2028, after more than a century. The tournament kicks off on July 12 in Los Angeles, with medal matches scheduled on July 20 and July 29. All games will be played at the Fairgrounds Stadium a custom-built, temporary venue in Pomona, located about 50 km from downtown LA.
This landmark moment will feature six teams each in the men’s and women’s categories, totalling 180 players. Each squad will include up to 15 members, with the format sticking to fast-paced T20 cricket. Most match days will showcase double-headers, starting at 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM local time, while July 14 and 21 are rest days with no games scheduled.
The venue, officially named Fairplex, is a sprawling 500-acre complex known for hosting the LA County Fair and various cultural, trade, and sporting events since 1922. The Olympic organisers and Los Angeles city officials aim to ensure the games leave a lasting legacy for local communities. Mayor Karen Bass proudly highlighted LA’s commitment to inclusivity and participation, revealing over a million enrollments in the PlayLA youth program.
Cricket’s Olympic return is deeply symbolic it was last featured in the 1900 Paris Games with just two teams: Great Britain and France. This comeback underlines the sport’s growing international appeal. Recent global events like the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (where women’s cricket made its debut), multiple appearances in the Asian Games (2010, 2014, and 2023), and the USA-West Indies-hosted 2024 T20 World Cup have laid the groundwork for this breakthrough moment.
With cricket now stepping into one of the world’s biggest sporting stages, it’s not just a celebration of its rich history it’s an invitation to the future. The countdown to LA 2028 has begun.
