Big Cricket Records Gill Could Reach While Playing England

India vs England 3rd Test: Shubman Gill poised to break 4 Don Bradman world records standing for nearly 100 years.

Shubman Gill has made an incredible start to the five-Test series in England. As India's captain for the first time, he has already scored three centuries including a double hundred in just two matches. He has 585 runs so far at an average of 146.25. His twin centuries at Birmingham helped him break several records, including the highest match total by an Indian batter. And with three Tests still left, Gill has a chance to break even more records.
Most runs in a series by a captain
Gill could break a record that’s stood for 88 years Don Bradman’s 810 runs in a single series as captain. Bradman scored those runs during the 1936–37 Ashes. Interestingly, that was Bradman’s first series as captain, just like Gill's. If Gill gets 225 more runs, he’ll pass Bradman and also set the record for most runs in a captain’s first series. Bradman’s top score in that series was 270, and Gill has already made 269.
Sunil Gavaskar holds the Indian record for most runs in a series as captain 732 runs against West Indies in 1978–79. Gill is just 148 runs short of topping that.
Most runs in any Test series
There’s another Bradman record Gill could break, though it’s a tougher ask. Bradman scored 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes the most by any player in a single Test series. Gill needs 390 more runs to beat that. But the good news? Gill already has 585 runs, while Bradman had 394 after his first two matches in that series.
The most runs by an Indian in a Test series is 774, scored by Gavaskar in four matches against West Indies in 1971. Gill is just 189 runs away.
Most centuries in a series
West Indies legend Clyde Walcott holds the record with five hundreds in a single series, made in 1955 against Australia. Gill has three centuries already, so he needs two more to match Walcott’s record with three matches left to play.
Bradman also made four centuries in a series as captain in 1947 against India. Gavaskar matched that for India in two different series once as a player in 1971 and once as captain in 1978–79.
Fastest to 1000 runs as captain
Gill could beat Bradman's record of reaching 1000 Test runs as captain in just 11 innings. Gill needs 415 more runs in his next six innings to do it. The fastest among Indians to reach 1000 as captain was Gavaskar, who did it in 14 innings. Gill has nine innings left to beat that mark.
Most runs in a series against England
Yashasvi Jaiswal currently holds the Indian record, scoring 712 runs against England at home in 2024. Gill is only 127 runs behind.
The most runs in a series in England by an Indian belongs to Rahul Dravid 602 runs in 2002. Gill needs just 18 more to go past him.
Virat Kohli scored 655 runs as captain in a home series against England in 2016. Gill is 91 runs away from passing that too.
