England fast bowler Gus Atkinson was ruled out of the One-Day International series against the West Indies with a right hamstring strain on Tuesday.
England hopes Gus Atkinson will recover in time for next month's Test series against India, despite a hamstring strain that has ruled him out of the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies.
Atkinson bowled just three overs on the final day of England’s win over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge before holding his hamstring in discomfort. He has now been ruled out of the three-match ODI series starting Thursday. The England Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that he will undergo rehabilitation under their medical team’s supervision.
Since his debut last July, Atkinson has been a key bowler for England, taking 55 wickets at an average of 22.30 in 12 Test matches. His absence would be a big blow ahead of the five-match series against India, but England remains confident he will be fit for the first Test at Headingley on June 20.
England’s Fast-Bowling Concerns
England’s pace attack has been struggling with injuries. Brydon Carse (toe) and Chris Woakes (ankle) have recently returned to action in the County Championship, while Jofra Archer (thumb) is aiming for a Test comeback during the India series. However, Mark Wood (knee) has already been ruled out.
Archer has also been ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies, with Luke Wood replacing him in the squad. Atkinson will not be replaced, leaving England with Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, and Matthew Potts as their seam options for the first ODI at Edgbaston.
Other Fast-Bowling Options
Woakes will continue his recovery by playing for England Lions against India A at Canterbury. Other fast-bowling options in the Lions squad include Sonny Baker, Josh Hull, Eddie Jack, and Ajeet Singh Dale.
England will be hoping Atkinson recovers quickly, as his presence will be crucial in the upcoming Test series against India.
