Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after the T20 matches in Jamaica

37-year-old all-rounder & two-time T20I World Cup Champion Andre Russell to retire from international cricket after featuring in 84 T20 International matches.

After the first two T20Is against Australia playing at Sabina Park in Jamaica, Andre Russell, the West Indies all-rounder, will take his retirement.
Since 2019, Russell has been playing T20Is, and he has 84 caps. He has decided to take his retirement just 7 months before the T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will host in February 2026. Along with that, he has also played 56 ODIs and one Test.
In a heartfelt message, Russell reflected on the pride he felt representing the Caribbean side, saying it was one of the greatest achievements of his life. He spoke of how his love for the game grew over time, pushing him to strive for excellence and leave a lasting legacy in the maroon jersey. Playing in front of family and friends was always a special experience for him, and he expressed his desire to finish his journey on a high while inspiring the next generation of cricketers from the region.
His decision to step away came as a surprise to selectors, especially following Nicholas Pooran’s retirement just weeks earlier. Russell was a key figure in the West Indies’ T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016, with memorable moments like his early dismissal of Alex Hales in the final at Kolkata.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy paid tribute to Russell, calling him a “consummate professional” and praising his unwavering drive to perform and win for the team. Sammy wished Russell well for the future, hoping he continues to inspire young talent beyond the international stage.
Replacing Russell in the squad for the upcoming matches against Australia in St Kitts is young pacer Matthew Forde. In addition to Forde, two fresh faces have earned call-ups to the T20I squad 17-year-old Jewel Andrew and 23-year-old Jediah Blades.
Captain Shai Hope will continue to lead the side, which also features Rovman Powell, who missed the Global Super League campaign while playing in Dubai.
Looking ahead, Sammy emphasised that the team’s focus remains firmly on preparing for the 2026 T20 World Cup. He highlighted the importance of continuity and the squad’s intention to refine their playing style and strengthen their identity
West Indies squad: Jediah Blades, Shai Hope (c), Jewel Andrew, Matthew Forde, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd
