Adil Rashid’s Journey Continues Beyond 200 Wickets Milestone
Adil Rashid claimed his 200th ODI wicket in the 137th match of his career.
After completing 200 ODI Wickets at Headingley on Saturday Adil Rashid made a statement that has the will to play international cricket which also has automatically dismissed the rumours related to the retirement.
Rashid made history as the first English spinner to reach this milestone, but it happened during their second straight loss to Australia. England has now lost 10 of their last 14 ODIs. If they lose again at Chester-le-Street, they will lose the series with two matches left. Bad weather on Monday forced them to train indoors, which might save them from another loss, but it also means they can’t win the series.
This is a transitional squad missing several senior players, including captain Jos Buttler, which has been used to explain the mistakes so far. Despite this, the new era, starting with interim coach Marcus Trescothick and later Brendon McCullum, has had a rough beginning.
Even with the focus on new tactics and players, Rashid is still a key part of England’s limited-overs teams. The next three years include the Champions Trophy in February, the 2026 T20 World Cup, and the 2027 50-over World Cup. Rashid, who has a central contract until the end of the 2025 summer, plans to be involved in all these events.
“I haven’t thought about retiring yet,” said Rashid before the third ODI at Chester-le-Street. "I just want to keep playing, enjoy it, stay fit, bowl well, and help my team win, especially in World Cups and Champions Trophies.
"I’m taking each game and series as it comes. As long as I’m enjoying it and performing well, I’ll keep going.
"I never imagined playing this long and taking so many wickets. It’s been a fun journey with ups and downs, and I hope to keep doing well for the rest of my career.
“Retirement isn’t on my mind at all. I’m focused on enjoying the game and giving it my all.”
Rashid’s statement is important given the current situation. Joe Root (resting) and Ben Stokes (undecided) might return to the limited-overs team, especially with the Champions Trophy coming up. England’s first Test in 2025 is at the end of May against Zimbabwe at Lord’s. The team has lost a lot of experience in the last six months.
Moeen Ali, who retired recently after missing T20 and 50-over games against Australia, will be missed the most by Rashid. They are close friends, always together at home and abroad. There were worries that Rashid might retire too, but for now, he will continue. On Tuesday, Rashid will play his 138th ODI match, the same number Moeen finished with.
