ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Marsh to captain Australia at the T20 World Cup in place of Fraser-McGurk and Smith

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Marsh to captain Australia at the T20 World Cup in place of Fraser-McGurk and Smith

Australia Team squad is finalized for ICC Men's T20I World Cup 2024

Australian selector has decided the provisional team of 15 members for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 hosted in the USA and West Indies. The Selectors have dropped the finest and youngest batters- Jake Fraser- McGurk and Steven Smith from the provisional squad. While second-spinning specialist Ashton Agar and all-rounder Cameroon Green were trusted by the selectors for the tournament.

Mitchell Marsh, the interim skipper who had been already leading the Australian team for the last three T20 series, has now marked a confirmed position for the T20 position. And also will be leading the squad in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament, commencing on June 7.

The bowling department seems grouped with an enriching experience where Nathan Ellis the fourth fast bowler will be accompanying Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. Matthew Wade has marked the first choice for Wicket-keeping in the span of reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis is kept.

Despite the stunning performance in the current IPL 2024 session for the Delhi Capital, smashing three half-centuries at a strike rate of 233.33, Fraser-McGurk didn’t get the chance in the T20 squad.

Smith's non-selection is not shocking among fans due to the past performance output. Previously, he has been given a chance to play against India for two T20Is and two more against New Zealand in February but failed to make it out with figures.

Australian selectors kept their trust in the trio of experienced performers of last year's ODI World Cup i.e. Travis Head, David Warner and Marsh. The strong middle order of the playing XI is again seen as trusted with the experienced players- Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David.

Cameron Green and Josh Inglis were shown the first preference against Fraser-McGurk and Smith for the final 15-team squad due to various multi-role functionalities.

Mathew Short also got unlucky to be selected for the T20 World Cup. However, he has shown a markable performance during the two BBL seasons.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey stated in the conference; why Agar and Green were selected in the Squad of 15 members despite other availability.

"We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh in complementing our front-line attack options," Bailey said.

He Further added to note: "The batting options available allow a tailored approach to each venue and opponent." "Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett were all part of long conversations, along with several others, including Jake Fraser-McGurk who is yet to play T20 International cricket but continues to impress and is developing rapidly."Being constrained to a squad of 15 for World Cups is always a challenge given the different scenarios and options we'd like to cover. We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we wish to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming weeks under ICC regulations."Ultimately the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign."
