Zampa and Inglis ruled out of Perth ODI vs India; Kuhnemann and Philippe added to squad
Australia will be without legspinner Adam Zampa and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis for the first ODI against India in Perth. Matthew Kuhnemann and Josh Philippe have been called up as replacements.
Zampa is staying home in northern New South Wales as his wife is expecting their second child soon. Since Perth is far and hard to travel from quickly, he’s likely to miss the first match but could return for the second and third ODIs in Adelaide and Sydney. He’s also expected to play in the five-match T20I series that follows, all of which are on the east coast.
Inglis is still recovering from a calf injury he picked up during a running session in Perth over four weeks ago. He’ll miss the first two ODIs, but Australia hopes he’ll be fit for the third match in Sydney on October 25. In his absence, Philippe will keep wickets in an ODI for the first time, while Alex Carey plays a Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide to prepare for the Ashes.
Kuhnemann is set to play his first ODI in three years and his first ever in Australia after last featuring in Sri Lanka in 2022. He’s been part of multiple squads across formats this year but has played just one match: a T20I against West Indies in July. Domestically, he’s played three 50-over games for Tasmania this season, taking a few wickets and scoring an unbeaten 56 against NSW.
Carey, part of Australia’s main ODI squad, won’t be in Perth as he’s playing a Shield match for South Australia starting Wednesday. Philippe, who last played an ODI in 2021, will miss two Shield games for NSW due to this late call-up. He hasn’t played for Australia since 2023 but has been in strong form for Australia A and has a solid domestic one-day record.
Australia’s selectors are juggling workloads ahead of the Ashes. Cameron Green will play the first two ODIs but might skip the third to play a Shield match in Perth. He’s unlikely to bowl in the India series but will increase his bowling workload in the Shield game after bowling just four overs in his last outing.
