Titans Shock Mumbai with Rain, No-Ball, and Run-Out Mistake to Secure a Stunning Win
IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans defeat Mumbai Indians by 3 wickets in last-ball thriller. A rain-interrupted match, GT ends MI's 6 match winning streak.
Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a thrilling last-ball victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-affected match, ending MI’s six-match winning streak and climbing to the top of the IPL 2025 points table. The game was filled with twists, rain interruptions, and dramatic moments, making it one of the most exciting matches of the season.
MI’s Strong Start and GT’s Missed Chances
MI started their innings with early struggles, as GT’s bowlers found seam movement after winning the toss and choosing to field. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Ryan Rickleton in the second ball, while Arshad Khan troubled Rohit Sharma before getting him out for just 7 off 8 balls.
GT had a golden opportunity to dominate early, but they dropped Will Jacks twice on 0 and 29 and also missed a chance to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav on 10. These mistakes proved costly, as Jacks scored his first IPL fifty in just 29 balls, while Suryakumar continued his incredible form, registering his 12th consecutive score of 25 or more. MI looked comfortable at 97 for 2 in 10.3 overs, setting up a strong platform.
GT’s Bowlers Fight Back
GT’s bowling depth allowed them to pull MI back into check. R Sai Kishore troubled MI’s middle order before dismissing Suryakumar Yadav with a clever delivery that cramped him for space. He forced Hardik Pandya into a top-edged slog, getting another important wicket.
Meanwhile, Rashid Khan bounced back from his poor performance in the previous match, dismissing Jacks after drawing five false shots in just nine balls. Prasidh Krishna and Gerald Coetzee continued the momentum, picking up wickets and strengthening GT’s grip on the match. Rashid returned to bowl the 18th over, conceding just four runs, while Corbin Bosch hit two sixes in the final over before getting hit on the back of the head, an incident that would later impact the game.
GT’s Chase Begins in Tough Conditions
MI’s bowlers found seam movement early, making GT’s chase difficult. Trent Boult dismissed B Sai Sudharsan in the second ball, while Jasprit Bumrah and Boult bowled exceptionally well, forcing GT to struggle at 21 for 1 in five overs. At this point, GT was well behind the DLS par score, making their chase even more challenging.
Middle Overs Drama
As the rain stopped, Jos Buttler helped GT recover, while Shubman Gill struggled to find his flow. An 11-ball over from Hardik Pandya, which included two no-balls and three wides, helped GT gain momentum. However, MI introduced Ashwani Kumar as a concussion substitute for Bosch, and he dismissed Buttler in his second over, slowing GT’s progress.
Rutherford’s Impact
GT was five runs behind the DLS par score when Sherfane Rutherford came in as an Impact Player. He started slowly but turned the game around with an inside-edged four and two well-placed shots, scoring ten runs in a single over. In the next over, he attacked Ashwani Kumar, pushing GT eight runs ahead of the par score just before rain forced players off the field.
MI’s Late Comeback
When play resumed, Bumrah and Boult struck back, dismissing Gill and Shahrukh Khan in quick succession. Boult also removed Rutherford, leaving GT struggling at 126 for 6. MI had turned the game around, and with just two overs left, GT was four runs behind the DLS par score. And finally, at the last possible moment, leaving GT 15 runs to get in one over. Deepak Chahar bowled the final over, where Rahul Tewatia hit a boundary on the first ball, along with Gerald Coetzee smashing a six on the third ball, whereas Chahar bowled a no-ball, making things easier for GT, and a sharp bouncer forced Arshad Khan to face the last ball.
With one run needed off the last ball, MI still had a chance to tie the game. However, they made two key mistakes they didn’t have a fielder close to the pitch to catch the throw, and Suryakumar Yadav and the bowler were slow to react. Hardik Pandya tried for a direct hit but missed, leading to wild celebrations from the GT players.
