Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze Recalled for India Test Tour by West Indies
Former skipper Kraigg Brathwaite was dropped from the squad while Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze were recalled as West Indies announced a 15-member squad for the two-Test series against India next month.
West Indies have announced a refreshed 15-member squad for their upcoming two-Test series against India, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad. The selection comes in the wake of a crushing 3-0 defeat to Australia, where the team was bowled out for just 27 in the final Test a result that triggered an emergency strategy meeting involving legends like Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, and Brian Lara.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze return to the Test setup, aiming to strengthen a top order that’s struggled for consistency. Chanderpaul brings experience and grit, while Athanaze’s ability to handle spin is expected to be crucial in Indian conditions. Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre earns his maiden Test call-up after a standout domestic season, where he took 41 wickets at an average of 13.56.
Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe emphasised a thoughtful approach to selection, balancing recent performances with tactical fit for subcontinental pitches. Head coach Darren Sammy echoed that sentiment, highlighting the need for transformation at the top and spin depth in the absence of Gudakesh Motie, who has been rested to manage workload.
Notably, former captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Mikyle Louis, Keacy Carty, and Johann Layne have been dropped. Roston Chase will lead the side, with Jomel Warrican as vice-captain. The second Test will be played in Delhi from October 10–14.
West Indies squad: Roston Chase (C), Kevlon Anderson, Jomel Warrican (VC), Alick Athanaze, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, John Campbell, Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Shamar Joseph, Anderson Phillip, Khary Pierre, Jayden Seales
