Suryavanshi, just 14, appointed as Vice-Captain of Bihar's Ranji Trophy Team
Ranji Trophy 2025- 2026: Bihar will take on Arunachal Pradesh in their Plate League season opener at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna on October 15.
Bihar has named young batting talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi as vice-captain for the first two matches of the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 season, starting October 15. The team will be led by Sakibul Gani. The announcement came just two days before the season began, as the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) rushed to appoint a temporary selector after a BCCI directive. The board has asked BCA to form a full five-member selection panel soon.
Suryavanshi’s promotion comes after a strong run with India Under-19. On the Australia tour, he hit a 78-ball century in Brisbane and scored 133 runs in three innings, helping India win the series 2-0. Earlier in England, he smashed a record-breaking 143 in youth one-dayers and finished as the top scorer with 355 runs at a strike rate of 174.01.
Despite being just 14, Suryavanshi has already played five first-class matches since debuting at age 12. However, he’s yet to make a big impact in the format, scoring only 100 runs in 10 innings. His Under-19 duties have limited his Ranji appearances so far.
He made headlines earlier this year by becoming the youngest player to score a century in men’s T20S 101 off 38 balls for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He was also the youngest ever IPL pick at age 13 and played seven matches in the 2025 season, scoring 252 runs at a strike rate of over 200.
Bihar had a poor 2024–25 Ranji season, failing to win a single match and earning just one point from seven games. They were relegated to the Plate league and will begin their campaign against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna, followed by a match against Manipur in Nadiad on October 25.
Suryavanshi’s talent and maturity have sparked interest from other state teams, but for now, BCA is focused on keeping him and rebuilding around him. He may not play the full Ranji season, as he’s also in contention for India’s Under-19 World Cup squad in early 2026.
