South Africa Wins Against England and Rain to Take 1-0 Lead in Cardiff
England needed 69 in five overs to win via the DLS method, but Jansen (2-18) and Bosch (2-20) combined to restrict the England team to 54-5 in 5 overs.
South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against England after winning a rain-affected game in Cardiff. The match was originally reduced to nine overs per side, but rain interrupted play again, cutting South Africa’s innings short at 7.5 overs. England were then given a revised target of 69 runs to chase in just five overs.
South Africa looked set for a score over 100 before the rain hit. Captain Aiden Markram led the way with a quick 28 off 14 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes. He had just been sold for R14 million (around $800,000) in the SA20 auction. Markram built a solid partnership with Lhuan-dre Pretorius, adding 32 runs for the second wicket. Dewald Brevis and Donovan Ferreira then smashed 36 runs off just 15 balls to push South Africa towards a strong total.
After the rain break, England faced a steep chase needing nearly 14 runs per over. Things got worse when Phil Salt and Harry Brook were dismissed for ducks. Jos Buttler tried to fight back with 25 off 11 balls, but without support, England couldn’t keep up with the required rate.
Luke Wood Steps Up
England made a last-minute change, bringing in Luke Wood for Jofra Archer due to the wet conditions. Wood made an immediate impact, dismissing Ryan Rickelton for a golden duck with a swinging delivery. Though Markram hit him for a few boundaries, Wood bounced back to remove Pretorius with help from a brilliant diving catch by Brook. He finished with figures of 2 for 22.
Brevis Shows His Value
Dewald Brevis, who broke the SA20 auction record with a R16.5 million ($944,000) deal, lived up to the hype. He smashed Liam Dawson for two sixes in one over, including a no-look shot. He also hit Adil Rashid for another six over midwicket. Sam Curran eventually got him out with a clever slower ball, but Brevis had already made his mark.
Rabada and Jansen Return Strong
South Africa welcomed back Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, both returning from injury. Rabada struck with his first ball, dismissing Salt. Buttler hit back with a four and a six, but Rabada kept things tight. Jansen also impressed, taking the key wicket of Buttler and mixing up his pace well. His two-over spell helped seal the win for South Africa.
South Africa were missing Lungi Ngidi (hamstring injury) and Keshav Maharaj (groin strain). Nandre Burger will replace Ngidi and join the squad for the second T20I in Manchester on Friday.
