Shreyas Iyer Granted Six-Month Break from Red-Ball Cricket by BCCI
Shreyas Iyer will lead India A in the three-match ODI series against Australia A. Iyer is taking a six-month break from red-ball cricket, domestic and International matches due to back issues.
The BCCI has approved Shreyas Iyer’s request to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. The decision comes after Iyer formally communicated his need for time off, citing workload management and a desire to focus on fitness and white-ball formats.
This means Iyer will not be available for India’s upcoming Test series against West Indies starting October 2, nor for any domestic red-ball fixtures during this period. He is expected to continue playing in limited-overs formats, including ODIs and T20Is, depending on selection and fitness.
The break also aligns with Iyer’s recent withdrawal from the India A four-day match against Australia A in Lucknow, where he was originally named captain. His absence had already sparked speculation about his red-ball future, and this confirmation from the BCCI now clears the air.
Iyer’s decision comes at a time when the selectors are reshuffling squads ahead of the West Indies series and the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia. With Test spots opening up, younger players like Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Nitish Kumar Reddy may get extended opportunities.
