Sharjah to Host Thrilling ODI Series Between Afghanistan and South Africa in September
South Africa and Afghanistan are set to play their first bilateral series, with three ODIs scheduled in Sharjah on September.
Afghanistan and South Africa are totally ready for their Pioneer bilateral series, which is going to be a three-match ODI series in Sharjah on September 18 and 22. The host of the series would be the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) as per the reports.
This series wasn’t originally planned in the Future Tours Programme (FTP). CSA Chairman Lawson Naidoo called it an important step in the partnership between the two cricket boards. The series will finish five days before South Africa’s matches against Ireland in Abu Dhabi, which start on September 27 and include two T20Is and three ODIs.
Lawson Naidoo also added that he is very excited about this ODI series with Afghanistan, who is a very competitive team which is visible in their recent performance in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 as well as in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. This marks an important step in our cricketing relationship, and we’re excited for a competitive and entertaining series.”
These matches weren’t originally part of our schedule. However, after an important discussion with Cricket South Africa, we’ve decided to host the Proteas for an ODI series in September,” said ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf. “They are a great team, and we look forward to hosting them and playing against them regularly in the future.
Before going to the UAE, South Africa will play two Tests and three T20Is in the Caribbean against the West Indies, starting on August 7. For Afghanistan, the matches against South Africa will be another opportunity to perform well against a Test-playing nation. These games will take place less than a week after their first-ever Test against New Zealand in Greater Noida, India, from September 9 to 13.
