Piyush Chawla Announces Retirement from Professional Cricket

Indian star spin bowler Piyush Chawla has officially retired from all forms of Cricket. After a 20-year professional career, Chawla announced his retirement from international and domestic Cricket through his social media page.

Former Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has announced his retirement after a professional career spanning over 20 years. The 36-year-old played three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is for India, with his last international appearance coming at the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
Chawla's final domestic outing was in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which he had hoped would lead to an IPL 2025 contract. Having played 192 IPL matches, Chawla represented Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians, taking 192 wickets. One of his most iconic moments came in 2014 when he hit the winning runs for KKR, securing their second IPL title in three seasons. His last IPL game was in 2024 with Mumbai Indians, finishing as the fourth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.
Chawla first made headlines at 16 when he bowled Sachin Tendulkar with a googly in the 2005 Challenger Trophy. He debuted in Tests in 2006 against England after being part of India's Under-19 World Cup squad alongside future stars like Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara. His career highlights include being part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning team, and a historic tri-series victory in Australia in 2008.
In domestic cricket, Chawla played for Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, amassing 446 first-class wickets in 137 matches. In his farewell message on Instagram, he expressed deep gratitude to his coaches and reflected on his journey with pride. "From representing India to winning World Cups, every moment has been a blessing. Though I step away from the crease, cricket will always be a part of me," he wrote.
As he moves on to new opportunities, Chawla leaves behind a legacy of skill, resilience, and unforgettable moments in Indian cricket.
