ODI’s Ranking: Gill and Theekshana Secured the No.1 Position
Gill has overtaken Babar Azam to become the top-ranked ODI batter, while Theekshana has surpassed Rashid Khan to claim the top position among bowlers.
Shubman Gill and Maheesh Theekshana have secured the number-one position in the section of Men’s ODI batter and Bowler in the ICC rankings that were updated on the first day of the Champions Trophy. In this list, Gill has left Babar Azam behind, whereas Theekshana has left Rashid Kha and secured the position.
In the home ODI series against England, Gill played some excellent matches where India won 3-0 and in which Gill scored 87, 60 and 112 because of which he gets the top run-getter award in the series. Meanwhile, the next scorer was Shreyas Iyer who was only 78 runs behind from Gill.
This is Gill’s second time where he has secured the top position in ODI cricket the previous one was at the time of World Cup 2023.
Rohit Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Daryl Mitchell, who climbed two spots after scoring 81, 10, and 57 in the tri-series in Pakistan, follow in the top five.
After the two-ODI series against England, Sri Lanka's captain Charith Asalanka jumped eight spots to No. 8, while Pakistan's captain Mohammad Rizwan moved up to 15th place.
Sri Lanka didn't qualify for the Champions Trophy, but Theekshana and Asalanka performed well in the two-ODI series against Australia, with Theekshana taking 4 for 40 and none for 11.
Rashid has dropped to the second spot as he hasn't played an ODI since last December, but he's close behind Theekshana. Rashid has 669 rating points, while Theekshana has 680. A strong Champions Trophy performance could put Rashid back on top.
Following Theekshana and Rashid in the bowlers' rankings are Namibia's Bernard Scholtz, India's Kuldeep Yadav, and Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi in the top five. New Zealand's captain Mitchell Santner has also made significant progress, moving up five spots to No. 7 after taking five wickets in the three ODIs in the Pakistan tri-series.
