Jones and Smith Helps England win easily in a match that didn’t affect the tournament.

England defeated New Zealand by eight wickets in Sophie Devine’s final ODI, chasing 168 in under 30 overs. Amy Jones starred with an unbeaten 86, while England’s spinners set up the win with a strong bowling display.

England wrapped up their Women's World Cup group stage with a dominant eight-wicket win over New Zealand in a match that had no impact on the semi-final line-up. While England had already secured a spot in the semis, New Zealand were out of contention, making this a “dead rubber.” However, the game held emotional weight as it marked the final ODI appearance of New Zealand legend Sophie Devine.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, New Zealand never found momentum. Their innings ended at just 168 runs in under 39 overs. Georgia Plimmer top-scored with 43 off 57 balls, and Amelia Kerr added 35 off 43. Devine, in her farewell match, managed 23 runs from 35 balls. The rest of the batting line-up failed to make an impact.

England’s bowlers were sharp and disciplined, especially the spinners. Linsey Smith led the attack with 3 wickets, while Nat Sciver-Brunt (2 for 31) and Alice Capsey (2 for 34) chipped in with key breakthroughs. The bowlers kept the pressure on throughout, never allowing New Zealand to build partnerships.

England’s reply was smooth and confident. Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones gave them a strong start with a 75-run opening stand. Beaumont scored 40 before getting out, and captain Heather Knight added a steady 33 off 40 balls. Amy Jones was the standout performer, remaining unbeaten on 86 and guiding England to victory in less than 30 overs.

Though the match didn’t affect the standings, England gained valuable momentum ahead of their semi-final clash against South Africa on October 29. For New Zealand, the day was more about celebrating Sophie Devine’s incredible career. Over 159 ODIs, she scored 4,279 runs and took 111 wickets, becoming one of the most respected all-rounders in the women’s game.

Her final outing may not have ended in victory, but Devine’s legacy as a fierce competitor and inspirational leader will remain a proud chapter in New Zealand cricket history.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 168 in 38.2 overs (Georgia Plimmer 43; Linsey Smith 3-30) lost to England Women 172/2 in 29.2 overs (Amy Jones 86) by 8 wickets
