Jaiswal strengthens Mumbai’s SMAT campaign
Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) campaign has received a big boost with the addition of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The India opener, fresh from scoring a century against South Africa in the third ODI at Visakhapatnam, has agreed to play for Mumbai in the National T20 Championship.
A senior Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official confirmed Jaiswal’s availability, saying, “He has made himself available for the SMAT campaign.”
Jaiswal last played in the SMAT during the 2023-24 quarter-final and missed the previous edition due to national duties. At 23, he has already featured in 28 matches, scoring 648 runs in 26 innings. He averages 27 with a strike rate of 136.42 and has three half-centuries to his name.
There is still no clarity on whether Rohit Sharma will play in the tournament. Reports suggested he might join, but MCA officials said he has not confirmed yet. Team sources had earlier hinted at his participation, but as of Sunday morning, it remained uncertain. Like Jaiswal, Rohit was also part of India’s ODI squad.
Defending champions Mumbai, led by Shardul Thakur, are currently playing in Lucknow. They top Elite Group A with five wins from six matches. Their final league game is against Odisha on December 8.
From each of the four Elite Groups, two teams will qualify for the Super League. The Super League matches will be played in Pune on December 12, 14, and 16. The final will take place on December 18 between the top two teams from the Super League.
