Iyer to Captain India A in One-Day Matches Against Australia A; Patidar Named Captain of Rest of India

Shreyas Iyer will captain India A in the one-day series against Australia A, while Rajat Patidar has been appointed skipper of the Rest of India (ROI) side for the prestigious Irani Cup.

In a surprise move, Shreyas Iyer who recently stepped away from red-ball cricket will now lead the India A team in the upcoming three-match 50-over series against Australia A in Kanpur, scheduled from September 30 to October 5. This marks a shift from earlier plans, where Rajat Patidar was named captain for the first match and Tilak Varma for the remaining two.

Now, Iyer will take charge for all three games. No vice-captain has been named for the first match, but Tilak Varma currently in the UAE with India’s Asia Cup squad will join as Iyer’s deputy for the second and third matches.

Patidar, who recently led Central Zone to a Duleep Trophy win, has been pulled out of the India A squad. Instead, he’ll captain the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup against Ranji champions Vidarbha, starting October 1 in Nagpur.

Joining the India A squad for the second and third matches will be fellow Asia Cup players Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh. Meanwhile, Priyansh Arya and Simarjeet Singh will exit the squad after the first match, as previously announced.

This reshuffle reflects the BCCI’s balancing act between managing player workloads and giving opportunities across formats, especially with key tournaments and selections around the corner.

The Rest of India squad for the upcoming Irani Cup match against Vidarbha in Nagpur has received a major boost, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan joining the ranks. They’ll team up with Rajat Patidar, who leads the side, along with a strong mix of experienced and in-form players.

The squad includes Abhimanyu Easwaran, Yash Dhull, Tanush Kotian, Manav Suthar, Akash Deep, and Khaleel Ahmed many of whom were recently in action during the four-day series against Australia A in Lucknow.

Gaikwad returns after an elbow injury that kept him out since the early IPL 2025 matches. He made a strong statement with a brilliant 184 in the Duleep Trophy for West Zone earlier this month. Dhull also comes in with form on his side, having scored 133 in a Duleep Trophy game last month.

Akash Deep is set for a competitive comeback after being rested for the Duleep Trophy. He had a standout performance in England’s Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, including a ten-wicket haul at Edgbaston. He’ll be part of a pace unit featuring Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, and Khaleel Ahmed.

The spin attack looks solid too, led by Saransh Jain Player of the Series in the Duleep Trophy alongside Kotian and Suthar.

With a balanced squad and several players in top form, Rest of India will be aiming to challenge Vidarbha on their home turf starting October 1.
