Hazlewood is not injured, but Abbott will miss the first Test after his hamstring tests

Update: Hazlewood is not injured, but Abbott will miss the first Test after his hamstring tests

Ashes 2025: Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood suffered an injury scare ahead of the first Ashes Test against England from November 21, while team-mate Sean Abbott has been ruled out.

Australia’s preparations for the first Ashes Test in Perth have hit a few bumps, with injury concerns surrounding key fast bowlers. On day three of the Sheffield Shield match at the SCG, Josh Hazlewood reported tightness in his right hamstring, prompting captain Steven Smith to immediately pull him off the field as a precaution. Fortunately, scans cleared Hazlewood of any serious injury, and he is expected to train as planned ahead of the Perth Test. However, his fitness will be closely monitored in the coming days.

In contrast, fellow squad member Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the opening Test after scans confirmed a moderate strain in his left hamstring. Abbott had impressed with figures of 4 for 18 against Victoria, but will now begin a recovery program. Both Hazlewood and Abbott missed the second innings and did not bat as New South Wales suffered a heavy 300-run defeat.

Australia captain Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a back injury and will miss the Perth Test, shared updates on the situation. He noted Hazlewood seemed upbeat after his scans and expressed sympathy for Abbott, who had worked hard to earn his spot in the squad. Cummins himself is targeting a return for the Brisbane Test and said he was operating at about 90% during a recent net session.

The SCG match saw several Test squad members in action, including Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon. Cameron Green also returned to bowling, while Tasmania’s Beau Webster impressed with eight wickets. Brendan Doggett, the uncapped South Australian quick, strengthened his case with a five-wicket haul against Tasmania and could be in contention for a debut if needed.

If a replacement for Abbott is required, Michael Neser is likely to be the first choice. However, any further injuries could stretch Australia’s pace reserves. With the Ashes opener just days away, the team will be hoping for a smooth build-up and no more setbacks.
