Harshit Rana scolded and gave a demerit point for sending off Dewald Brevis
The incident occurred in the 22nd over of South Africa's chase when Rana removed Brevis and turned towards the dressing room while celebrating.
Harshit Rana has been given a demerit point for his gesture towards Dewald Brevis after dismissing him in the first ODI between India and South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. The ICC said the act broke Article 2.5 of the code of conduct, which bans actions or gestures that insult or provoke a batter. This is Rana’s first offence in the last two years.
A Level 1 offence like this can lead to a warning, a fine of up to 50% of the match fee, and one or two demerit points.
The incident happened in the 22nd over of South Africa’s chase of India’s 349. Rana got Brevis out, caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad at deep point, and then pointed towards the dressing room. Brevis’ wicket was important as he was building a strong partnership with Matthew Breetzke, who top-scored with 72.
Rana had already dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock, finishing with 3 for 65. Earlier, Virat Kohli had scored 135 off 120 balls, his record 52nd ODI century, leading India’s batting after South Africa chose to field first.
Rana admitted to the offence after being charged by the match officials on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.
