Ashes 2025: Neser shines with maiden five-for as Australia go 2-0 up
Australia took a 2-0 lead in the Ashes with a comfortable eight-wicket win in the pink-ball Test at the Gabba. Chasing just 65 runs, they wrapped up the match in only 10 overs, despite losing a couple of wickets along the way.
Michael Neser was the star of the game, claiming his first-ever five-wicket haul. He dismissed key batters Will Jacks and Ben Stokes, helping bowl England out for 241 in their second innings. His spell set up Australia’s easy chase.
England started Day 4 at 134 for 6, still trailing Australia. Earlier, they had collapsed from 90 for 1 to 128 for 6 late on Day 3. On Day 4, Stokes and Jacks tried to fight back with a determined stand. They showed patience and grit against Australia’s bowlers, especially Scott Boland, who kept troubling them with movement off the pitch.
The pair added 96 runs together, frustrating the Australians and giving England hope. Jacks eventually fell for 41, caught brilliantly by Steve Smith off Neser’s bowling. Soon after, Stokes, who had reached his fifty, also edged Neser behind. England’s resistance ended quickly, and they were bowled out for 241, leaving Australia with a small target.
Travis Head attacked from the start, hitting boundaries and a six. Jake Weatherald supported him well as the openers added 37 runs quickly. Gus Atkinson dismissed Head and Labuschagne, but Steve Smith finished the job in style. He smashed two fours and a six off Jofra Archer before sealing the win with another six, handing England their 14th defeat at the Gabba.
This was the first time a team lost a Day-Night Test after scoring more than 300 in the first innings. England’s first innings was built around Joe Root, who scored 138 not out his first Test century in Australia. Mitchell Starc starred with the ball, taking 6 for 75, and later top-scored for Australia with 77. Contributions from Weatherald, Labuschagne, Smith, and Carey helped Australia post 511. England began their second innings well but collapsed again, paving the way for Australia’s victory.
